The Think Tank ~ My Creative Meltdown

The Think Tank ~ My Creative Meltdown

I suppose this could be part two of my previous Think Tank article, as it ties in with unemployment and all of the negativity that goes along with it, however, this is a horrible feeling that can strike anyone at anytime, which establishes this as an article unto itself.

Whether you are a musician, painter, actor, author, or any of the thousands of creative professions across the globe, I am sure you can all relate to “the blank slate syndrome” as I like to call it, but what happens when the antagonist, played by “creative meltdown,” renowned actor and major pain decides to take up residence for a few weeks or months?

I remember the days when I could sit down at my piano, or grab my acoustic guitar and pump out a few decent songs, however, now I find myself sitting idle with this alien contraption made of wood and vibrating pieces of thin steel and staring into space as if I never played a note in my life. After about fifteen minutes of the same three chords I played the day before, I place my guitar back into its cradle on the wall and go watch a movie. It is the same with my writing and photography, and without mincing words, it sucks and is extremely depressing.

I have been unemployed for a little over a year, which isn’t the situation I expected to be in today, however, I remember when I worked full time thinking to myself, “If I had a month to do nothing but concentrate on my creative endeavors I would be golden,” yet here I am a year later, and what have I accomplished? Don’t get me wrong, the time off has given me the opportunity to work on my book, and acquire a decent following on the blog, but it seems as if it all came to an end about two months ago.

The only explanation I have is that one of the sheep I count at night caught my head with its back hoof and knocked the right side of my brain right out the window. I have never knitted in my life, but when I find that creep, there is a nice wool jacket in my future!

All kidding aside, has anyone experienced or perhaps is going through this type of creative meltdown? If so, what did you attribute it to, and more important, how did you get your groove back? I tried Stella, but she refused to return my phone calls.

I look forward to your feedback.

Peace,
Bryan
